Foot Odour
What causes foot odour?
Foot odour is often the result of sweaty feet. When feet are confined to shoes and socks for long periods of time (such as in the winter or people who work with heavy boots on all day) they become warm and need to cool off by sweating. Bacteria, which live naturally on our skin and commonly in our shoes, are then able to multiply in a warm, moist environment. The bacteria then produce an odorous molecule called isovaleric acid.
How can a Chiropodist help?
A Chiropodist can assist in getting rid of unwanted smells. They can suggest an over the counter antiperspirant or deodorant, prescribe a stronger antiperspirant, give advice about how to clean feet and shoes, as well as treat any secondary complications such as fungus or blisters.
