Toe Walking

What is toe walking?
Toe walking occurs when a person primarily walks on the ball of the foot and places very little pressure on the heel. There are many different reasons for toe walking which include: force of habit, neuromuscular disease (ex. Muscular dystrophy), congenital short Achilles tendon and compensating for foot deformity/ condition (ex. Foot drop). It is normal for young children under 3 to toe walk and they often grow out of it.
How can a Chiropodist help?
A Chiropodist can perform a biomechanical exam and gait analysis to help determine the cause of the toe walking, advise on stretching exercises, provide information on a proper shoe and prescribe custom foot orthotics if flat feet/ over pronation is the cause.
