Sever's Disease (Calcaneal Apophysitis)

Picture
What is Sever's disease?
Sever's disease is inflammation of the calcaneal growth plate in a child.  It occurs due to overuse or repetative micro-trauma during activity.  Often Sever's disease is related to tight calf muscles and/ or a flat foot. Pain usually occurs at the back of the heel and sometimes under the heel bone.  The pain usually increases with activity and is relieved with rest.

How can a Chiropodist help?
A Chiropodist can give advice on modifiying activities, demonstrate and implement stretching exercises, construct a heel lift, provide advice on proper footwear, give information on decreasing associated inflammation and prescribe custom foot orthotics.
