In toeing/ Out toeing

Picture
What is in toeing?
In toeing occurs when a child walks with their feet pointed inward, rather than straight. It is also known as pigeon toed. There are different conditions which may cause in-toeing such as metatarsus adductus, tibial torsion and femoral anteversion.  Children may or may not complain of pain associated with in toeing.  Patients may notice the inward position of the feet or find their child trips frequently.  Although some kids can "out grow" in toeing, it is a good idea to have it checked by a professional, especially if there is associated pain.

What is out toeing?
Out toeing is an outward position of the feet while walking.  It is less common than in toeing. It may be caused by external tibial torsion, femoral retroversion or neuromuscular disorders. As with in toeing children may "out grow" out toeing.

How can a Chiropodist help?
A Chiropodist can do a thorough biomechanical exam and gait analysis to determine the cause of the in/ out toeing.  They can provide patient and parent education regarding the condition and proper shoes to wear.  A custom foot orthotic can be prescribed if necessary.
